Paula Found A Pearl in a Tin of Smoked Oysters November 05, 2024 |
Hi, Paula Wells expected a snack — and ended up with a ‘blessing’. Paula Wells was celebrating her 55th birthday after a difficult year when she bit into a smoked oyster sold by a seafood stall and her teeth hit something hard. Taking the oyster out of her mouth, she discovered a small pearl, which experts say she had only a one in 100,000 chance of finding. “I thought, ‘What a blessing.’ It was like a pearl of wisdom,” said Wells, an estate agent from Shrewsbury. She said that the pearl in the oyster, which she had bought at Borough Market in Southwark, central London, was the size of the plastic bobble on a sewing pin, which is about 4mm in diameter. “It’s not as big as you would find on a pearl necklace,” she said. “It’s shiny and sweet and lovely.” Stephen Lucas, who runs the Tinned Fish Market with its founder, Patrick Martinez, told The Times that they are now considering updating their warning labels to include the risk that another customer might find a pearl. At present the label warns oyster eaters: “Cans may contain traces of sand. Rinse thoroughly before consuming.” Thank you, Tina, for alerting me to Paula's wonderful find.
