Australia's Oldest Pearl Farm

Australia's Oldest Pearl Farm

Cygnet Bay, home to the oldest Australia-owned pearl farm.

Started up by the Brown family back in 1960, the farm these days produces around 80,000 pearls a year and is believed to hold the record of producing the largest round cultivated pearl ever! (22.24mm).

Bruce Brown joined the family operation in 1969 , and says the family is very proud about the fact they managed to develop the technique of growing pearls by themselves, without the help of the Japanese who have traditionally dominated the industry.

"It was very difficult and very secretive because when we started back in 1960, the pearl technicians that were working in the industry were all Japanese and they wouldn't tell you anything; so my brother had to develop that technique completely by himself without any reference to the Japanese and it took him about 10 years to perfect it."
