Clams: the wonder of their reproduction
Gender and the rules governing reproduction are not written in stone. There is no one correct way to propagate a species.
Take, for instance, the softshell clam. Right now, in the waters off the coast of New England, softshell clams, buried in sediment just below the tideline, are spawning.
One might ask how does a male clam woo a female? What courtship rituals are observed? How do clams pick the best mate?
The answers: they don't woo, there aren't any rituals, and they don't pick a mate.
