Giant Clam with One Inch Pearl

Outer Shell

This mollusk comes from the waters of the Sulu Sea near Brookes Point, Palawan, and I believe it is Tridacna Gigas, or a Giant Clam. The Shell measures 25.4 x 17.8 cm (10 x 7 in,) and the attached pearl measures approximately 32 x 25 x 23 mm (1.5 x 1 x 1 in) The 32 mm dimension is a conservative measurement as accuracy is difficult with the tools at hand and I can only guess where it might be separated from the shell.

Knowing nothing about pearls I am beginning my research and have came across your site, which I find very interesting and informative; however, have not, as of yet, found anything to compare my pearl with. Any information, comments or advice you or your subscribers might offer regarding typing, classification, grading, valuation, comparisons or anything else, would be welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Questions:

• Would a Baroque “Blister Pearl,” of the same size be worth more or less?

• Is an attached pearl considered more valuable than one that’s been detached?

Thanks,
Ron
