Heirloom Clasp

by Susan
(San Rafael)

I have a pearl choker necklace. The clasp was made for a double strand necklace, but there is only one strand now and I don't think the pearls in this strand are original to the necklace. The clasp itself is beautifully made, with 18k gold and very white pearls. This necklace came down in my family and my guess is that it is 120 to 150 years old. I would love an opinion on this.

Thanks, it had not occurred to me that it might have been a brooch, but looking at he back of the clasp I see that the clasp part is not integral to the ornamental part.

Antique Brooch as Clasp
by: Alison

The clasp on your necklace is beautiful, and looks like it may be a 19th century brooch converted to this use, so would indeed fit with an age of about 120 years. The pearls themselves appear to be cultured, likely 50 to 80 years old.
