I found a black pearl in the Grand River

by Reena Mallen
(Brantford Ontario Canada )

Just two days ago I was with my husband and daughter wading in the banks of the Grand River in Brantford Ontario and I found a very large clam shell. A couple days later I decided to clean the shell up and lo n behold there was a pearl inside! I am so stunned as I can't find any information about anyone ever finding one here and most especially a black one. What a find.

Grand River NEW
by: Anonymous

Was there a live mollusk 🦪 in it and could you remove the pearl? While kayaking in the Grand River, I once found half a clam shell with what I think is a fossilized mollusk and maybe a black pearl peaking out of it. The clam almost fills my whole hand and the entire thing is completely solid as a rock.

White pearl
by: Cheryl

I found a white pearl in a clam in the Grand River in York Ontario. It was in the early 1980's.

Wahooo! Congratulations!

Wow, Reena,

I would be super excited too! Really, to find a pearl and a black one at that.

It would be nice to see photos. Submit again if you like with photos so we can see your treasure!

Thank you for sharing.

Did you keep the shell? Yes, a black freshwater pearl is much rarer than a white one!

God bless!
