Muscatine Pearl Button Memories

by Rita

My late Aunt worked at the Old Button Factory in Muscatine many, many years ago. Probably close to around 60 years ago. Through my late mother (her sister-in-law) I acquired an old ButterNut coffee can full of the buttons. Some look like abalone and there are some that were never "punched" and are just smooth round pieces of shell.

Just wanted to share this memory with you re: the Button Factory.

I'm interested to know if anyone knows the history of how the factory started. My grandmother's Uncle John moved to Iowa and started a Button Factory, this is the factory my Grandmother spoke of often. Please if anyone knows anything
Thank you Barb

Brings back memories
by: Kari

The image of buttons in a ButterNut coffee can stirs up all kinds of memories for me. I love hearing about the great people who worked so hard in our city's pearl button factories. My hat is off to them. It was not easy work and often the pay was very low, but most were happy to have work.

We'd love to see a photo either of your aunt, yourself or your button can. You can email me a photo here: karipearls(at)gmail(dot)com and I can add it to this page for you.
