Red Abalone Pearl

Red Abalone Pearl

I went abalone diving with a buddy last weekend at Van Damm State Park in Mendocino County, California. One of the abs we ate contained this 5.5" pearl. We were pretty surprised as I understand they're rare. I'm not sure what it's worth, but hope to find someone who can give me an appraisal. Depending on what it's worth, or if it can even be sold due to California State laws, we'll most likely turn it into a nice pendant or two for my wife and daughter.

That pearl is a standout and looks amazing. I can only imagine how many small yet wonderful jewelry can be made through this piece. I am sure the price will be high and you can get value for the hard work done by diving at Van Damm State Park.

Norcal crack diver
by: Peter

Ill never forget this Pearl and the crack you pulled it from, good to hear from you again. Id love to watch you dive again. Your physique in that wetsuit was truely something to behold, such grace not only in the water but on land as well. A true NorCal crack diver.

Have you considered having your jewler check it out? Surely you have a jewler?

RE: Raw Pearl
by: Anonymous

Yes, it's raw. I haven't been able to get it appraised as there is no standard or benchmark to appraise it against. I've been to several pearl experts and a marine biologist. No luck. If I have any hopes of selling I think it will need to be made into jewelry first.

Wow.. Is that a raw pearl that we are looking at right now? I haven’t had the luck to see a real pearl in my life and those I have seen is the processed ones which is so glazy and decorated Ones.

Nice pearl, Kevin. Must have been a thrill to find it. I like the idea of making a pendant. Would be a fun design project. Thank you for sharing your treasure!
