Restrung Wedding Pearls

The string on my 15 year old, wedding pearls broke at the clasp. I took them to a jeweler I've gone to before and had them restrung. They are now about 2 inches shorter and he says 1 1/2 to 2 inches is normal and that they will relax and lengthen with time. What do you think ???

You're welcome
by: Kari

I haven't really done that much stringing. The glue tip was passed on to me from those who showed me how they knot and also from a lady who worked for Mikimoto in London on Bond Street. Items come to them unstrung and the local clerks there finish them off, so they have lots of experience. God bless. Kari

Stringing pearls
by: Anonymous

I have strung pearls for over 30 years and I recommend Never use glue on a knot. For a few reasons if the pearls need to be restrung at a later date the glue by the knot will stick to the thread and the pearls on either side of the knot will not be any use again --- so your restrung necklace will be shorter because of the 2 or 4 missed pearls. I found this out when someone asked to have a necklace restrung. I always leave 3 pearls on the unfinished necklace and go through them and make knots.

Perfectly normal
by: Anonymous

Hi.
I'm a professional stringer.
1.5-2 inches is normal. It depends on how streached out your necklace was to start with. I do always suggest to count your pearls. I myself always count them in front of the client before I take them in, but this is not the practice everywhere.

pearl count
by: Anonymous

You should always count your pearls before having them restrung, as well as know the mm size. This way there is no question as to whether or not your necklace is the right length.

Reason to be skeptical
by: Kari

Hi, You have reason to be skeptical. The necklace should not have been stretched out to shrink that much. I'm assuming it was a cultured pearl necklace which would not normally be tempting to snitch from, unless, of course, it was a fabulous, amazing cultured pearl necklace or a very, very rare natural pearl necklace. Was it a graduated or all the same size pearl necklace?
