Over the past century there have been highs and lows, as the famous well known story of Pierre Cartier exchanging, in 1916, a double strand pearl necklace for the Cartier building in Manhattan shows. At the time it was an even trade - a million dollar necklace for a million dollar building. But after the pearl necklace owner's death her pearls sold for a mere $181,000. This was due to the introduction of cultured pearls by Kokichi Mikimoto.
